The ‘Quote Me Happy’ insurance people Norwich Union have come up with some amazing facts regarding the way we feel about happiness and home-life.
In a nationwide survey in which 2000 men and women were asked whether they considered their home to be happy, nearly all respondents said yes. North Easterners proved themselves among the happiest of all with a rating of 96%. Quite why the Geordies are so cheerful is hard to say: it’s unlikely to be because they came 14th in the Premiership last season, and it surely can’t be the weather.
However, least happy are the Moaning Minnies of London, where only 84% think their home is a happy one, with 16% claiming it isn’t. The rest of the supposedly prosperous South East aren’t far behind in the misery stakes either.
Fiona Somerton-Edwards, of Norwich Union, explained: "Our ‘Quote Me Happy’ insurance campaign has really caught the public’s imagination this year, so we thought we’d find out how happy people really felt about their home-life. The results make fascinating reading which will certainly influence the way we communicate." And the happiest time of year? "Summer, definitely, closely followed by Christmas."
Norwich Union is keen to find out who has ‘Britain’s Happiest Home’ with the launch of an online competition. For a chance to win, log on to www.norwichunion.com/happyhomes between 7 July and 31 October to enter the ‘Happy Homes’ competition. The winner will receive an Ł8000 prize (cash or vouchers) in order to help make their happy home a dream home, with 20 runners-up obtaining a Ł100 prize.
The overwhelming spirit of happiness from the survey might not be shared by one major category of consumers – the nation’s 20 million domestic pets who, it appears, might only be second or third choice to be rescued in the event of a fire.
In Scotland, certainly, Tiddles the cat is going to have to look after herself, while her male owner rushes to grab his family photo albums and wallet before his thoughts turn to saving his furry friend.
