Aviva Life Insurance Company India Pvt. Ltd. and Insurance Research Centre (IRC) at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Under the MoU, Aviva will be providing a research grant to set-up this centre to support the research and case writing activities on a continuous basis or project-to-project basis. All grants would be revenue grants and no capital grant is proposed. The first research project by IRC will be on micro insurance, its requisite analysis and final publication of the report.

Stuart Purdy, managing director, Aviva Life Insurance, India, said: “We are delighted with this partnership. This is one of our key initiatives in line with Aviva’s commitment to support thought leadership initiatives, which provide strategic direction to the evolving Indian Insurance industry. Within a backdrop of insurance being part of controlled economy, very few initiatives have been undertaken in India to develop an understanding of the issues affecting the growth and development of the insurance sector. The work with IIM A will not only help Aviva but the industry as a whole”

Bakul Dholakia, director, IIM-Ahmedabad in his message said: “I am very happy that IIM-Ahmedabad and Aviva Life Insurance are partnering in IIMA’s IRC, which is a pioneer for the Insurance Industry.”

Ramesh Bhat, representing IIM-Ahmedabad said: “Very few business schools in India have formal courses on insurance and very little research and case writing work are being currently undertaken in India to examine issues facing this sector. During the last few years IIM Ahmedabad has started addressing some of these issues and taken initiatives focusing on developing understanding of insurance sector through research, education and training.”

The centre proposes to have an advisory committee consisting of senior policy and decision-makers from the private sector, the government and academic institutes. The committee will review and provide overall guidelines for the projects and activities with the objective of making them relevant and useful to the strengthening of insurance sector.
