Hibernian Insurance was awarded a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award in London this week for its contribution to road safety in Ireland through its Ignition inexperienced driver training programme.

The Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Awards are presented to individuals, companies or organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to improving road safety. They are organised by RoadSafe - a partnership of leading companies in the motor and transport industries in Britain, the UK government and road safety professionals which aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by road accidents and promote safer driving.

Hibernian’s Ignition scheme, which was originally launched as a pilot in September 2001 and formally launched with the assistance of footballer Damien Duff in January of this year, is a one-day driver training course that has been specially tailored for less experienced drivers and which demonstrates Hibernian’s dedication to reducing motor insurance costs, as well as improving the standard of driving on Irish roads.

The Ignition course*, which is free of charge for all participants, combines an interactive "classroom" session with on-road training, designed to accelerate the driver’s experience. The course focuses on hazard awareness and encourages participation from all delegates in discussions about safety and driving habits. On passing the course participants are eligible for a minimum of 20% discount on their motor insurance policy up to a maximum of 50%.

Dick O’Driscoll Managing Director of Hibernian said: "I am delighted to accept the award on behalf of the company and on behalf of the 15,000 inexperienced drivers who have successfully participated in Ignition and received discounts on their Hibernian motor insurance premium – we look forward to continuing the success of Ignition in 2004"
