Jaroslaw Myjak, Aviva Country Chief Executive for Poland, has won the competition for the title “Manager of the Year 2002” in Poland. The award was announced at a gala in Warsaw. Mr Myjak has received the symbolic Crystal Pyramid.
The “Manager of the Year” multiphase competition has been organised by the Association of Managers in Poland. It is widely regarded as the most prestigious management award given by reputable leaders of Polish business, top management scholars, leading economists and presidential aides.
Leszek Balcerowicz, Poland’s central bank president and the main author of Poland’s sweeping economic transition started in 1989, was the honorary patron of the 2002 edition of the competition.
The jury has taken into account not only financial results and market position of the businesses managed by candidates, but also their professional qualifications and track record, appeal of their personalities, management vision and creative attitude to the business environment.
Krzysztof Oblój, head of jury and professor at the International Management Centre, Warsaw University, justified the verdict: “Establishing a model corporate organisation and structure, including distribution, which can be then copied in other countries was selected as the greatest achievement this year. Commercial Union Poland has managed to do this. It serves as example for the group’s businesses in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It has also increased total revenues, profits, and applied rigorous expense management. This is why Jarosław Myjak has won the competition.”
Jaroslaw Myjak commented: “I am convinced that almost 10 years of my work for the reputable British business Aviva has played a role in helping me practise an Anglo-Saxon model of management and distinguished me from other business leaders. I owe a lot to Aviva Academy programmes ‘Leadership for the Future’ at New York’s Columbia Business School and CEDEP programmes at Fontainebleau, France. I assumed my responsibility in a boom period and now I am not afraid of taking tough decisions."
