France: www.aviva-prevention.com presents ‘Alex & Co’, the first road safety animated cartoon on the net

Every year since 1995, Abeille Insurance, recently renamed Aviva, has taken part in the fight for road safety.

Alex, aged 6, and his big sister Isa learn the basic principles of road safety for children of 3 to 13… The key: interaction and gifts to be won.

Every year since 1995, Abeille Insurance, recently renamed Aviva, has taken part in the fight for road safety.

By launching www.aviva-prevention.com, its road safety site, Aviva is offering children aged 3 to 13 the opportunity to crack the Highway Code while having fun.

The first educational web series on the subject, ‘Alex & Co’, is made up of 26 episodes put out every fortnight. The little angels get an animated cartoon so that they can easily readily grasp most of the principles of the Highway Code and go about quite safely on their way to school.

A veritable learner’s toolkit of an educational game, each episode of ‘Alex & Co.’ tells a tale and enacts a lesson from the Highway Code.

An interactive game then allows the child to go deeper into and understand the ideas dealt with earlier. When all the answers to the questions are correct, the young player can download a gift (writing paper, screen saver, t-shirt transfer).

A threefold educational aim…

It is between the ages of 3 and 8 that children acquire the ability to take account of danger. With ‘ Alex & Co ‘, they can:

  • Identify with the cartoon characters and get into a receptive mood
  • Validate the knowledge acquired over the episodes
  • Go further into the rules of a topic brought up in the course of the episode and absorb them
  • The simultaneous use of animations, questions/answers, sound effects and voice-overs allows very small children to take part since all written messages are read out loud.

The child, master of the game…

A young child can follow the series with his parents on the family computer and answer the questions in the game with their help or, if he is more independent, he can do it himself. He makes his choice by clicking on the text corresponding to what he thinks is the right answer. An animation automatically followed by a correction with comments tells him whether the selected answer was right or wrong.

Two loveable characters and suitable artwork:

The main characters in ‘Alex & Co’ are the younger generation of a modern family living in house in an urban area - two children (Alex 6 and his sister Isa 14) and their parents (between 35-40).

Characters and scenes are treated in a realistic manner so that a process of identification is possible and the rules of road safety do not seem to be a product of a ‘virtual’ universe. With this web serial, Aviva is offering a more fun approach to road safety. Very gently, children are made aware of the dangers of the road and can even become real driving school instructors for their parents…
