New research from Norwich Union has revealed that nearly three quarters of fathers said that spending time with the family would be their ideal Father’s Day. However, 61 per cent of fathers said they will be watching the World Cup on Sunday.
Also, fathers are probably losing out when it comes to celebrating Father’s Day. Overall nearly three quarters of parents said they make a point of celebrating Mother’s Day and only half celebrate Father’s Day. Surprisingly, 61 per cent of men thought in general, Father’s Day isn’t considered to be as important as Mother’s Day, whereas only 43 per cent of women thought so.
Despite the fact that many people are delaying major decisions which have a big financial impact, the research also revealed that the majority of 18 to 34 year olds believe that fathers today are under more financial strain than their own fathers:
- The average age of the first time buyer has risen sharply in the UK and is now 34.*
- The average age women have their first child is increasing and is now nearly 30.**
- Nearly a half of all men between 18 to 34 in full time employment do not have any kind of pension ***
Louise Goffee, spokesperson for Norwich Union, said: “It’s not just the World Cup which is on people’s minds at the moment. More and more people are choosing to delay major decisions such as buying a house and starting a family, which may have an impact later on in life.”
