External engagements
We continue to engage with our industry peers and other groups to ensure that Aviva is fully involved with all parts of society where it can reasonably make a positive contribution and impact.
Hong Kong Power Smart Contest 2007
Aviva Hong Kong sponsored the ‘Power Smart Contest 2007’ organised by Friends of the Earth (HK). This project involves an appeal to the public to reduce their electricity consumption. Each participating household was challenged to reduce their electricity consumption by at least 3% in any two consecutive months from June to August in 2007 compared to the same period in 2006.
Aviva HK recruited over 100 of its own staff and their families and reached out to business partners to take part in the event. Collectively we saved 5,059 kWh of electricity. In appreciation of all the support from our staff and business partners, Aviva donated an additional HK$ 50,590 to Friends of the Earth. This will be used to support their longer-term environmental programmes.
Racing across Australia powered by the sun...
Aviva Australia teamed up with the Southern Aurora group to enter the ‘Avivasolarcar’ in the ultimate challenge in sustainable energy, the iconic Panasonic World Solar Challenge.
The challenge involved 40 entrants from around the world racing across Australia – 3,000 km from Darwin to Adelaide – powered only by the rays of the sun. The Avivasolarcar finished an impressive third place in its class (Adventure Class) and sixth overall at the World Solar Challenge.
Or racing to work with pedal power
On 17 October Aviva Australia joined with Bicycle Victoria as a partner in ‘Ride to Work Day’, an initiative which went national for the first time in 2007. Through a poster, e-mail and intranet campaign, staff were encouraged to ride to work for its many environmental and health benefits. The day has grown to become Australia’s biggest active workplace event with 60,000 regular and first-time riders participating.
