Mark Hodges was appointed chief executive of Aviva UK which comprises the Life and Pensions and General Insurance businesses in January 2010. He was appointed to the board of Aviva plc as an executive director in June 2008 and is also a member of the Aviva group executive committee.

Previously Mark was chief executive of Aviva UK Life, formerly known as Norwich Union Life, and held this role since April 2006. Mark re-shaped the strategy of the UK Life business to simplify the business model, improve service to customers and reduce costs significantly. This included the outsourcing of administration of almost 3m heritage policies to Swiss Re and the announcement of a £2.3 billion special bonus to more than one million with-profits policyholders. Most recently the completion of the £500 million inherited estate reattribution and the re-brand of Norwich Union to Aviva.

Mark joined Norwich Union in 1991 and held a number of senior roles within the finance function. These included roles in strategy, planning, corporate finance, risk and compliance and reinsurance.

During this period, Mark was involved in the de-mutualisation and flotation of Norwich Union in 1997, the acquisition of the London & Edinburgh Insurance Company in 1998, and the merger of Norwich Union with CGU in 2000.

He was finance director of Norwich Union Insurance from 1998 until May 2005, where he also had responsibility for strategy development, and oversaw the finance offshoring project to India and Sri Lanka.

In 2003 he took on additional responsibility as Aviva General Insurance International finance director, giving him a wider group remit including being a member of the board at Hibernian Insurance in Ireland.

During his time as Norwich Union Insurance finance director, Mark played a key role in the acquisition of RAC. Following the purchase of RAC plc, Mark was appointed as managing director of Norwich Union General Insurance in May 2005.

Professional qualifications and memberships

Mark is a professionally qualified accountant (FCCA) and has an MBA from Cranfield Business School. Mark is a member of the FSA’s Financial Practitioner Panel and also the chairman of Shaping Norfolk’s Future.

Family and interests

Mark is married and has three daughters and a son. He has a keen interest in rugby and golf and is an avid follower of Norwich City football team.
