of how we developed our corporate responsibility strategy - Good Thinking for everyone

Stakeholder
engagement

We listened hard

We started by speaking to customers, employees and external experts, and worked with them to understand the big challenges for our world and our customers and create our approach to corporate responsibility.

We spoke to thousands of our stakeholders across the world

Customers - through customer research;

Employees - talking to around 800 Aviva colleagues;

Peers, governments, regulators and NGOs - through ongoing conversation and dialogue;

Not to mention shareholders, investors, business partners and the companies we invest in.

The big
challenges

These conversations highlighted a number of challenges:

1. For our world - complex global issues that will increasingly affect our customers' lives and in turn our business in the future:

Climate Change

We're facing more weather related catastrophes as a result of climate change. 94% of worldwide insurance payouts for natural disasters stem from extreme weather events.[1]

An ageing population

By 2050, the earth's population is expected to increase from 7 billion to over 9 billion when 25% of the world's population will be over 65 versus 15% today.[2]

2. From our customers - questions from our customers about the way companies do business and how to do things better:

Powerful communities with higher expectations

Consumers rightly have higher expectations of companies and their power to influence positive change in their virtual and local communities has increased - nine in ten consumers expect companies to do more than make a profit - they believe they should act responsibly to address social and environmental issues.[3]

Low trust

Only 53% of the public trust businesses, with the financial services sector being the least trusted.[4]
