Water usage 660,356 m3 502,803 m3 N/A N/A

Notes:

  • Use of zero emissions electricity has increased across our businesses, with 61% (55%) of our electricity coming from such sources. Overall, 148 GWh (126 GWh) of electricity was derived from sources which emit zero carbon dioxide.
  • The CO2 conversion factor for electricity varies from country to country due to the energy source used in generation. These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website.

Energy consumption – travel

  Kilometres (km) CO2 tonnes
  2007 2006 2007 2006
Car fleet 42m kms + 16 m litres diesel* 72 million kms 50,774 tonnes 48,169 tonnes
Air travel 90 million kms 54.9 million kms 10,780 tonnes 6,698 tonnes
Rail travel 2.6 million kms 17 million kms 88 tonnes 658 tonnes

Notes:

  • The combined car fleet numbers 7,283 (6,724) vehicles - 1,269 (1,826) run on unleaded; 5,502 (4,812) run on diesel and 64 (86) LPG/hybrid/electric.
  • *The 16 million litres (12 million litres) of diesel is mostly in respect of the RAC and Auto Windscreens fleets. Due to the nature of their business this is the most accurate way of reporting the associated impact. We calculate CO2 emissions based on the fuel consumption.
  • Rail data was collected from Italy, Delta Lloyd, Poland, Romania, Spain, Hibernian, Czech Republic, India.
  • The conversion factor for air travel kms varies depending on whether the journey is long-haul (an average distance of 6,495 km) or shorthaul (an average distance of 500 km). These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website.
