Key achievements in 2006
Through a series of events and communications to all staff, we have raised employee awareness of the causes and effects of climate change and provided suggestions for office practices which contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An example of this is Aviva’s “TravelSmart” plan which has resulted in a 16% reduction in employee car parks being used and a 41% increase in staff cycling or walking to work.
In 2006, as part of our environmentally responsible initiatives, we introduced electronic online forms and application processes including internal e-pay forms and leave applications. Some product lines have also rolled out online annual report options.
As part of our aim to be an employer of choice, we encouraged staff to participate in employee surveys in order to receive feedback on methods of promoting well-being through effective employee initiatives. Over 90% participated in the staff “Pulse” (global) survey whilst 50% participated in the Hewitt “Best Employer” survey.
We created a dedicated education program addressing the importance of operational health & safety principles in the workplace, including the value in reporting hazards and incidents. This has been supported through the provision of free health checks, stop-smoking campaign, discounted health and exercise club membership and in-house exercise activities. Operational health & safety day 2006 was dedicated to staff well-being.
In order to improve customer service and build external trust of Aviva, we introduced a concentrated awareness campaign “Put yourself in some-one else’s shoes”. The campaign highlighted the importance of viewing Aviva from the customers’ viewpoint.
Further information on the above achievements and additional examples of our progress across all areas of the CSR programme can be found in the attached PDF.
