Investing in youth education and development

In Turkey, Aviva’s “Health, Education and Caring” programme, launched in 2006, aims to improve educational support in underdeveloped areas and is having a real impact. The project supports parents and pre-school children with special educational needs. This year 200 children aged between 6 and 8 who did not have the opportunity to benefit from pre-school education, graduated from a two-month summer education project named “Early Childhood Development Project”, which helped them to develop the basic social, physical and learning skills they need to start school. After successfully completing the summer school, pupils were given school bags consisting of vital teaching aids under the project named “Back to School”. Aviva was recognised for its contributions to Turkish education by the Social Services Agency.

Further, to show its support for the education of older children, Aviva Turkey also renovated the library at Istanbul University and co-sponsored the production of two books on insurance and re-insurance.

In France, Aviva works with “Mouvement pour les villages d’enfants”, a programme that helps children aged 2-17 who have been taken into care. It helps to give them more of a family life, trying to help brothers and sisters to stay together rather than being parted and to carry out activities such as dance, music and sport in a safe environment.

In 2006, Aviva Czech Republic again supported children from the social welfare institution Akord, which takes care of children and youths with mental and combined handicap by providing educational and medical care.

In India, Aviva employees joined a 5km walkathon sponsored by Aviva Global Services and Aviva Life Insurance, which aimed to raise awareness of education for underprivileged children. Close to Rs 200,000 (£2,290) was raised to fund some of Concern India Foundation’s (CIF) work educating underprivileged children. This is the second successful walkathon organised by Aviva and CIF.

Aviva Italy supported the “Hole in the Wall” community project that co-ordinates summer camps for children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions so they can experience a normal life without compromising any of their medical needs.

In the UK, Norwich Union’s continued sponsorship of UK Athletics sees its investment in grassroots athletics almost trebling, with the aim that by 2012 over 10 million children will be involved in the various schemes. As well as helping prepare children from all backgrounds with vital life skills such as improved confidence, discipline, motivation, behaviour and educational attentiveness, the provision of schemes such as these is now more relevant than ever in the search for future champions to bring success at the 2012 Olympic Games.
