A safe and healthy place to work

We are committed to making Aviva a safe and healthy place to work and visit. That means that we not only comply with health and safety legislation, but make sure that all our business units take health and safety seriously. And we have a reporting mechanism in place across the group to help us identify risks and confirm that we dealt with them correctly.

In terms of safety and security measures in 2006, Aviva Asia formed a crisis management team, which created action plans to help minimise the impact of terrorism or pandemics on employees and operations. In the UK, Norwich Union conducted a health and safety audit over 200 locations and agreed action plans. It also signed up to a health and safety partnership co-ordinated by York Council, where organisations can share knowledge and experience with smaller companies.

We are equally supportive of people's individual health and well-being. Some key achievements in 2006 include Aviva's nomination for the Work-Life Balance award in the Commonwealth Government's Diversity at Work Awards in Australia. Our businesses in France and Turkey offered flu vaccinations to all employees, while in Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy we offered health care or help with health costs to all employees. Aviva has committed to banning smoking in all its buildings by Q1 2007.

We also continue to offer confidential employee assistance programmes in our major businesses. In 2006, Aviva Spain hired an external Employee Support Programme provider called ICAS. Employees can receive confidential and effective advice by phone on everyday issues such as tax, as well as personal support or specialist advice on caring for sick children or relatives.
