Consolidated data

A view on direct impacts

The direct impact footprint of Aviva for 2006 can be seen in the group consolidated environmental data. 2005 data is shown in brackets.

The data is compiled from the following businesses:

Notes:

  • Businesses reporting for the first time include RAC, Auto Windscreens, BSM, Delta Lloyd in Belgium and Aviva India.
  • Newly acquired businesses during 2006 will be reported on in our next report. They include Eagle Insurance, Aviva Russia and the wider Aviva USA business, following the acquisition of AmerUS. We will also seek to report on Aviva Asia and Aviva Global Services.
Staff
Total staff numbers in businesses reporting environmental data 56,042 (46,358)

Note:

  • Environmental data covers 95% of total Aviva staff in 2006 (85% in 2005). This percentage is based on a total of 59,000 Aviva staff in 2006.
Property
Total number of locations 1,059 (533)
Total property area 1 million m² (1.2 million m²)
Parking facilities 10,678 (9,787)
Paper purchased Amount purchased Amount purchased

(7,809 tonnes)
964 tonnes
(138 tonnes)
Envelopes 1,853 tonnes
(1,638 tonnes)

(327 tonnes)

Note:

  • Paper with a recycled content now accounts for 12% of the total paper purchased.

*In addition to the data above, Delta Lloyd purchased 18,065 GJ (9,410 GJ) of steam and cold water for the air-conditioning system.

Notes:

  • Use of zero emissions electricity has increased across our businesses, with 55% of our electricity coming from such sources. In September 2006, Delta Lloyd in the Netherlands switched to sourcing its electricity from renewable sources. 100% renewable electricity is also sourced in Delta Lloyds German operations. In 2006 the UK sourced 78% of its electricity from zero emissions and, in October, the UK properties managed by Norwich Union Operational Services (including RAC) increased their percentage of zero emissions electricity back to 100%. Renewable sourced electricity is also used in Ireland – 89% (20% in 2005) and in Aviva Czech Republic – 17%. Overall, 126 GWh (107 GWh) of electricity was derived from sources which emit zero CO2 emissions.
  • The CO2 conversion factor for electricity varies from country to country due to the energy source used in generation. These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website: http://www.uneptie.org/energy/tools/ghgin/index.htm.

Energy consumption – Travel

  Kilometres (km) CO2 tonnes
Car fleet  72million km + 12million litres diesel*
(78.6 million km)
48,169 tonnes
(13,599 tonnes)
Air travel   54.9 million km
(50.4 million km)
6,698 tonnes
(6,235 tonnes)
Rail travel 17 million km
(31 million km)
658 tonnes
(1,043 tonnes)

*The 12 million litres of diesel is in respect of the RAC and Auto Windscreens fleets. Due to the nature of their business this is the most accurate way of reporting the associated impact.

Notes:

  • The combined car fleet numbers 6,724 (3,392) vehicles 1,826 (1,606) run on unleaded, 4,812 (1,664) run on diesel and 86 (122) LPG/hybrid/electric.
  • The conversion factor for air travel km varies depending on whether the journey is longhaul (an average distance of 6,495 km) or short haul (an average distance of 500 km). These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website http://www.uneptie.org/energy/tools/ghgin/index.htm.
