Philip Scott became chief financial officer in July 2007. He is a board director of Aviva plc and a member of the Aviva group executive committee.

In his previous role as group executive director, Aviva International, Philip was responsible for the strategic development of Aviva's businesses in North America and Asia Pacific. He was also responsible for the group's UK-based fund management operation.

Philip led the group's acquisition of AmerUs, a leader in the high-growth US equity-indexed market, which expanded Aviva's US presence fourfold.

He was responsible for developing Aviva's Asian long-term savings business and creating new operations in China and India, with strong local presences in Hong Kong and Singapore. In particular, he drove forward the rapid development of Aviva's presence in China where Aviva-Cofco is now the second-largest foreign insurer.

He began his career with Norwich Union as a trainee actuary in 1973. After qualifying in 1979, he went on to hold a number of positions, including working in New Zealand as an actuary, investment manager and head of global equities in the UK, before progressing to become chief investment officer of Norwich Union in the UK.

Philip was appointed chief executive of Norwich Union Life following a period as group finance director of Norwich Union. He played a key role in the demutualisation of Norwich Union in 1997 and the merger with CGU in 2000.

In 2002, Philip became executive chairman of Norwich Union Life and became executive director, Aviva Life International in July 2003.

Professional qualifications and memberships

Philip is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA) and chairman of the European Insurance CFO Forum. The forum is a high-level discussion group formed and attended by the Chief Financial Officers of major European insurance companies to discuss issues relating to financial reporting developments and how they can create greater transparency for investors. Philip is also a member of Council of the European Insurance Association (CEA) Strategic Board, and a member of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) Financial Regulation & Taxation Committee (FRTC).

He is a regular speaker at international conferences and a recognised authority on life and pensions issues, with his views often being sought by the government and the profession.

Philip was appointed a non-executive director of Diageo plc from October 2007.

Family and interests

Philip's interests include sailing, travel and gardening. He is a keen apple grower and runs a small traditional cider-making co-operative. He lives in London and Norfolk with his wife. They have a daughter who is a marketing professional.
