Hill House Hammond (HHH) have reported data for the first time and are investigating ways of progressing the programme within HHH
'Parking facility' figures for 2000 excluded legacy Norwich Union locations, these are now included.
Property data is measured

Paper usage

Envelopes 1,739 tonnes (632) 591 tonnes (0)
Notes
Paper usage is measured in respect of the main businesses and estimated for Morley and Hill House Hammond.

Purchasing
Direct purchasing
No. of suppliers 12,365 (28,314)
Amount of spend with suppliers £1.27 billion (1.28)

Amount of spend with suppliers £1.26 billion (1.56)

Environmental status of suppliers
No. of suppliers approached 598* (400)
No. making improvements 1 (53)
Notes
A new purchasing process has been introduced into the UK Norwich Union Central Services function. The system now identifies only the supplier with whom we have live contracts, this in conjunction with the rationalisation of suppliers through the merger of the legacy companies has caused the change in the number of suppliers recorded.
The amount of 'purchasing for customers' suppliers has been rationalised with the merger of the legacy companies
*Loss adjusters and motor repairers have not been contacted about their environmental impact, however environmental policy clauses have been incorporated into all their new contracts. These account for 598 of the Norwich Union Insurance Purchasing for Customers suppliers (86%).
The no. of suppliers making improvements has not been measured this year as in 2000 this figure consisted of suppliers who were involved in the Acorn Project.

Total related CO2 emissions 94,562 tonnes (118,905*)

Energy consumption – buildings
  GWh CO2 tonnes
Electricity 124.6 (150.7) 56,846 tonnes (71,884*)
Gas 92 (165.6) 18,595 tonnes (33,442)
Water usage 282,351 m3 (219,624)
Notes
The CO2 tonnes for electricity were calculated incorrectly last year, and as such they have been restated by adding an additional 9,231 tonnes to the 2000 figure and are now accurate*
The new electricity contract came into effect in October 2001 providing 19% of our electricity from renewable sources, which means that 5.4 GWh had zero carbon emissions.
The rationalisation of our computer centres has reduced our electricity consumption by 8.4 GWh per annum.
Electricity data is measured for all businesses, expect for Your Move which is extrapolated
Gas consumption data is measured for 2001, where previously it was extrapolated and estimated.
Gas consumption has also reduced due to catering facilities being scaled down or closed in line with the business needs.
Water usage is estimated.
The CO2 conversion factor for electricity varies from country to country due to the energy source used in generation. These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website -
http://www.uneptie.org/energy/act/ef/GHGin/index.htm

Energy consumption – travel
  Kms CO2 tonnes
Car fleet 90.4 million kms (37.5) 16,416 tonnes (10,144)
Air travel 13.1 million kms (20) 2,039 tonnes (2,815)
Rail travel 19.6 million kms (18.1) 666 tonnes (620)
Notes
The UK vehicle fleet is made up of 4,663 vehicles - of which 4,048 vehicles run on unleaded petrol, 562 run on diesel and 3 run on LPG. These figures do not include details of car drivers who have taken cash option.
2000 car fleet kms were a combination of extrapolated and estimated data, as the legacy Norwich Union had no previous data. The 2001 data is more accurate than 2000, which is a combination of actual and extrapolated. The accuracy of this data will improve again for next year. The data also includes 3 million kms from Hill House Hammond, which was not previously reported.
The conversion factor to CO2 varies for car kms travelled depending on whether the vehicles use unleaded, diesel and LPG fuels. These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website -
http://www.uneptie.org/energy/act/ef/GHGin/index.htm
Air travel has reduced over the year, predominantly in respect of travel in Europe.
The conversion factor for air travel kms varies depending on whether the journey is longhaul (an average distance of 6,495 km) or shorthaul (an average distance of 500 km). These conversion factors can be viewed at the UNEP website-
http://www.uneptie.org/energy/act/ef/GHGin/index.htm
Rail travel has increased over the year and is estimated and extrapolated.

Glass not reported (11) not reported (6.7)
Aluminium cans 0.32 tonnes (12) not reported (3)
Toner/Print cartridges 61,611 units (31,901) 20,356 units (19,141)
Batteries not reported (16,165) not reported (0)
Lamps/Tubes/Bulbs 1.6 tonnes (5) minimal (0.08)
Notes
During 2001, the waste contracts in the UK were rationalised and in 2002 waste segregated in respect of all paper, plastic cups and cardboard will be introduced in all locations which house more than 200 staff, where a system is not already in place - this will cover approximately 70% of staff in the UK. A target has been set of reducing the amount of general waste going to landfill by 10% on 2001 data.
The volume of waste paper has reduced. In 2000 the higher figure was partly due to the scrapping of redundant documents and publications due to the merger.
Data for cardboard, glass, batteries and aluminium cans has not been reported for this year in respect of the main businesses, but extrapolated figures will be available next year through the implementation of the waste strategy.
The volume of plastic cups has increased due to the legacy Norwich locations moving to 'free vend'.
With the new catering contract the caterers are responsible for disposal of waste oils etc.
Toner cartridges used by the Life operations are remanufactured. Toner cartridges from Your Move are not reported, but are collected and donated to charity for reconditioning and re-sale.
17.2% of the furniture disposed of is recycled
Group office also produce 129 tonnes of general waste of which 32.2 tonnes was recycled.
Paper recycling in Your Move is currently limited to head office sites.
Data for plastic cups and toner cartridges is gathered from purchasing information.
