CGNU terminology
     
Business     A business or group of businesses identified by either function or geographical location
       
CSR steering group     A group of Directors charged with overseeing progress on the Group’s CSR programme
       
CSR review group     Representatives from the Group’s head office, businesses in the UK and abroad, auditors and ngos, who review progress over the past year, plans for the coming year and help develop CGNU’s understanding and practice of CSR
       
Environmental action group     A group of employees from all UK businesses responsible for identifying and pursuing specific initiatives over the coming year
       
Nominated Manager     A manager selected in a business to facilitate and report on local implementation of the CSR policy and programme
       
CSR management system     A system that translates the CSR policy statement into implementation of actions towards achieving the policy objectives and progress review. The results are either renewed or fresh actions agreed to achieve the objectives
       
Teamroom     A database information system used by over 130 CSR contacts responsible for implementing the programme throughout the Company
       
Direct impacts     Impacts that the Company has through the use of property, energy and water, travel and transport, waste and paper use
       
Indirect impacts     Impacts that the Company has via its core business such as claims, underwriting, fund management and purchasing through its customers and business partners
       
       
      External terminology
       
Global Compact     An initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, which calls on companies to embrace nine universal principles in the areas of environment, human rights and labour standards
       
Socially Responsible Investment (SRI)     A process that takes social, environmental and ethical criteria into account when investing in companies
       
Business in the Environment Index     The annual Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement benchmarks FTSE350 companies against their peers and whole industries against each other, on the basis of their environmental management and performance in key impact areas
       
Business in the Community Index     A new index which is being developed by Business in the Community which will seek to assess corporate performance in the field of CSR
       
BREEAM     Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method – an industry measure of energy and environmental performance of commercial buildings
       
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)     A type of vehicle fuel which is lower in CO2 emissions than petrol or diesel
       
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)     The most prevalent greenhouse gas. CGNU measures the environmental impact of the energy we use in our buildings and travel by equating energy usage to the amount of tonnes of carbon of carbon dioxide emitted
