Consolidated environmental data 2001

A view on direct environmental impacts

The direct impact footprint of CGNU for 2001 can be seen in the following Group consolidated data drawn from the following businesses:

Morley Fund Management
Norwich Union Central Services
Norwich Union Life (including Your Move)
Norwich Union Insurance (including Hill House Hammond)
CGU France
Delta Lloyd NV
Europe Division (Italy, Poland, Spain, Portugal - general insurance, Turkey - life and general)
International Division (Middle East, USA Life)
CGU Asia (including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong)
CGU Canada (including Pilot Insurance)
CGU Australia
Norwich Union Australia
New Zealand Insurance

Those businesses shown in blue are reporting for the first time and account for approximately 8% (5,400 staff) of total staff in the Group. The increase in number of businesses reporting can be expected to inflate the figures compared with those reported last year.

Data for each business can be found in the individual business reports.

2000 data is shown in brackets.

Total staff nos

58,371   (55,745)
Notes
• Our environment programme now reflects 91% of total CGNU staff against 80% in 2000.

Property
Total no. of locations 1,354 (1,298)
Total property area 1.07 million m2 (1.0)
Parking facilities 9,034 (6,827)

Paper usage
Amount used Amount with recycled content
Paper 18,728 tonnes (15,890) 337 tonnes  (82)
Envelopes 2,039 tonnes  (894) 663 tonnes  (66)
Notes
• The 2001 data presents a more accurate picture of paper and envelope usage in the UK than in 2000, since it is based on recorded data and extrapolation, whereas data for 2000 was necessarily drawn, in part, from estimation of usage. A further reason for the apparent greater paper usage in the UK for 2001 compared to 2000 was the enhanced communication activity caused by the re-branding exercise, which was completed in the early part of 2001.
• Delta Lloyd provided an estimated paper and envelope usage in 2000. They have now provided measured data this year for both 2000 and 2001, the 2000 figure has therefore been restated – an increase of 1,964 tonnes in respect of paper and 105.6 tonnes in respect of envelopes.
• Morley did not provide paper usage or envelope data in 2000.

Purchasing
Direct purchasing
No. of suppliers 31,404 (40,512)
Amount of spend with suppliers £1.6 billion  (£1.6 billion)

Purchasing for customers
No. of suppliers

1,451

(4,252)
Amount of spend with suppliers £1.58 billion  (£1.9 billion)

Environmental status of suppliers
No. of suppliers approached 701 (531)
No. making improvements 9 (62)
Notes
• A new purchasing process has been introduced into the Norwich Union Central Services function in the UK. The system now identifies only the supplier with whom we have ’live contracts’, this, in conjunction with the rationalisation of suppliers through the merger of the legacy companies, has caused the change in the number of suppliers recorded.
• In the UK, loss adjusters and motor repairers have not been contacted about their environmental impact, however environmental policy clauses have been incorporated into all their new contracts. These account for 598 of the Purchasing for Customers suppliers.
• The decrease in spend with suppliers with respect to customers in the UK is chiefly attributable to a decrease in weather-related claims and the cost reductions gained in relation to rationalisation of suppliers.

Total related CO2 emissions
135,764 tonnes   (152,392*)

Energy consumption – buildings
  GWh CO2 tonnes
Electricity 177 (192) 78,893 tonnes  (87,157*)
Gas 126 (196) 25,371 tonnes  (39,689)
Water usage 534,478 m3 (396,870)
Notes
• *The CO2 tonnes for UK electricity were calculated incorrectly last year. They have been restated, which represents an increase by 9,231 tonnes in the figure for 2000.
• In the UK, 5.4 GWh of electricity came from renewable sources and therefore has zero emissions.
• In addition to the water consumption figure shown above, CGU France uses 346,969 m3 of cold water (340,070 m3 in 2000) and 3,018 tonnes of steam (2,652 tonnes in 2000) in respect of the air-conditioning in the head office complex.
• In addition to the water consumption figure shown above, Delta Lloyd purchased 1,053 GJ of steam and cold water for the airconditioning system (616 GJ in 2000).
• UK Gas consumption data is measured for 2001. For 2000, figures were based on estimation and extrapolation.
• A partial reason for the reduction in gas consumption in the UK is the scaling down or closure of catering facilities in line with business needs.
• The increase in water consumption is mainly due to the contributions from businesses which have not previously reported – notably Norwich Union Australia.

Energy consumption - travel
  Kms CO2 tonnes
Car fleet 145 million kms (90.4) 26,297 tonnes (20,160)
Air travel 31 million kms (34) 4,153 tonnes (4,393)
Rail travel 30.8 million kms (29.4) 1,050 tonnes (993)
Notes
• 2000 UK car fleet kms were a combination of estimated and extrapolated data, as the legacy Norwich Union did not keep such records. The figures for 2001 are more accurate than 2000 as they are based on recorded data and extrapolation.
• The data also includes 3 million car fleet kms from Hill House Hammond, who are reporting for the first time.
• Norwich Union Australia does not have a car fleet, but does measure the kms travelled by taxi, both in Australia and for overseas – in 2001 this equated to 2.4 million kms.
• The combined car fleet data equals 6,832 vehicles – 5,843 run on unleaded, 796 run on diesel and 181 LPG or leaded.

Total waste / Total amount recycled

5,622 tonnes   (6,413)   3,971 tonnes   (4,425)

Waste management
Total amount Amount of total recycled
Paper 4,754 tonnes (5,687) 3,795 tonnes (4,116)
Cardboard 245 tonnes (564) 136 tonnes (283)
Plastic cups 25.4 million cups (16.2) 5.6 million cups (5.6)
Liquids 253 litres (21,483) 0 (20,960)
Office furniture 9 tonnes (119) 1 tonne (12.7)
Glass 11 tonnes (21) 3 tonnes (8)
Aluminium cans 8 tonnes (16) 3 tonnes (5)
Toner/Print cartridges 71,444 units (32,061) 23,262 units (19,303)
Batteries 2,045 units (18,185) 2,025 units (2,000)
Lamps/Tubes/Bulbs 3 tonnes (6) 0.3 tonnes (0.4)

Notes
• In the UK, office furniture has been measured in terms of cost to replace rather than weight this year, this cost is £563,679 - 17% of this furniture is recycled.
• The liquids waste has greatly reduced, making it less significant and as such we may not report this at Group level next year.
• The no. of plastic cups used has increased due to the introduction of ‘free vend’ in all ex-NU sites (UK) and due to reporting from Turkey Life for the first time. Plastic cups are no longer used in CGU Australia and in Singapore regional office.
• During 2001, the waste contracts in the UK were rationalised and in 2002 waste segregation in respect of all paper, plastic cups and cardboard will be introduced in all locations, which house more than 200 staff, where a system is not already in place – this will cover approximately 70% of staff in the UK. A target has been set of reducing the amount of general waste going to landfill by 10% on 2001 data.
• UK data for cardboard and aluminium cans has not been reported for this year in respect of the main businesses, but extrapolated figures will be available next year.
• The apparent significant increase in the toner cartridges usage actually reflects a great improvement in the capture of information on usage in the UK. This is now drawn from centralised purchasing records. It is expected that this figure will increase yet further, as more businesses capture this information.
• Data for general waste has been provided by CGU Canada and Group Office - totalling 592 tonnes of which 32.2 tonnes from Group Office has been recycled.
