Canada: Annual Lew Dunn Golf Tournament celebrates a decade

Date: 28 Aug 2009

The Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation held its tenth annual Charity Golf Classic fundraiser on 17 August, and raised a record C$310,000 for colorectal cancer. In the ten years that the Lew Dunn Charity Golf Classic has taken place, the Organizing Committee has helped to raise over C$2 million to aid in the fight against colon cancer.

The Lew Dunn Charity Golf Classic is an annual event hosted by the Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation and Aviva Canada in honour of the late Lew Dunn, former president and CEO of CGU and Aviva Canada, who passed away from colorectal cancer in 1999.

The foundation raises funds for surgical scholarships specializing in colon cancer. The scholarship enables the University Health Network, together with the University of Toronto to train future professionals dedicated to working in this important area of medicine.

This year’s event received an overwhelming amount of support, with more than 260 golfers eager to tee up at the double tournament. The tournament took place at The Club at Bond Head, Ontario.

Due to the foundation’s outstanding success in raising over C$2 million in funds, the Ontario government matched the monies raised, and funded a program for medical training to develop a permanent endowment in Mr Dunn’s name. The matched funds came from a program sponsored by the Ontario government to double generous donations that are given on behalf of medical training.
