Louder Together - the launch event for International Day for Street Children

Yesterday's launch of the first International Day for Street Children was the chance for the Consortium for Street Children (CSC) and its members, along with companies like Aviva, to show their commitment to helping the millions of children who live and work on the streets around the world.

Tuesday 8 March was International Women’s Day and even more impressively it was its 100th year. I attended an event organised to mark the occasion here at our offices in London.

I quickly learned that although we supported Earthwatch in scientific research in reality this can’t be done in isolation. Like the energy efficient stoves, the project involves the whole community gaining understanding and involvement for the project to be a success.

Today I travelled out of the Mombassa area on the main road to Nairobi. Nine of us made the journey in an old Toyota Hiace minibus without much rear suspension. We travelled for three hours watching the scenery quickly changes from the suburbs to the shanty areas and then to scrubland.

When carbon offset projects are undertaken it isn't just a matter of handing out energy efficient stoves. There is a long communication process and lots of politics. And even once the stoves are installed, there is a community team that follow up on a quarterly basis to make sure that people are still using the stoves.

At the end of 2006 Aviva formalised our carbon management strategy. For a number of years we had been collecting data and seeking ways to reduce the carbon footprint from our buildings energy consumption and business travel.
