Community

As a responsible business, Aviva is committed to help address challenges facing people and society

Our global strategy guides our approach channelling financial and organisational support to areas where we have real expertise to offer. We focus our efforts on programmes to support education and financial literacy and alleviate life trauma (ie preventing, or helping, people going through a distressing life event) which are in line with our 'prosperity and peace of mind' corporate vision.

We encourage employee volunteering in support of our focus areas as part of personal development and our people can apply for up to three paid volunteering days per year. The impacts of our activities are reported using the London Benchmarking Group model which helps our businesses around the world to capture information on the impact of their investments in the communities they serve as well as employee time and cash donations.

Our annual CR report includes detailed group community investment performance data and targets. In 2009 we extended our reporting of community impacts using Accounting for Sustainability's connected reporting framework which integrates financial and non financial data to provide a comprehensive account of our impacts.

In 2009 we launched "Street to School". Working with leading charities and experts, and supported by our employees and customers, together we will champion the needs of street children in the communities in which we live and work. "Street to School" has already been launched in 17 of our markets, and will gradually be adopted in every country in which we operate, accounting for 50% of our charitable donations.
