Corporate responsibility in practice

Aviva touches many lives. So our corporate responsibility initiatives (CR) aim high and wide, engaging with our employees, customers and suppliers, investors, local communities and the wider environment. We want what we do every day to have a positive impact in the societies in which we operate.

In everything we do, we want to be fair, honest and transparent. Our policies and programmes set out clear guidance, ranging from our code of ethics for all our employees, training on specialist topics such as anti-money laundering and fraud, to making sure we protect our customers' personal information.

Supporting the communities in which we operate is an important part of our work. We focus on three areas - life trauma, education and financial capability - where we can use our expertise and make a real difference. If you join Aviva, we'll give you opportunities to roll up your sleeves and get involved.

We have a group CR director whose job is to make CR relevant and engaging for our 36,100 employees, and help everyone we work with, both inside Aviva and in the wider business community, make a positive difference. In 2010 74% of employees responding to our internal survey said they think that our commitment to CR is genuine.

It's good to know that if you join Aviva, we'll be good for your career and give you opportunities to make a difference.

Here are some of the great things we've achieved in 2010:

Environment

  • 5% reduction in C02 emissions
  • 8% reduction in water use
  • 4% reduction in waste

Community

  • We invested £11.4 million in the community
  • Our employees volunteered 57,250 hours of their time around the world
  • Positively impacted 128,000 through our global community development programme Street to School
