Staff of Aviva constituent companies decorated for their actions in the 1914–1918 War.

”Home dwellers can never know what these men are suffering and cheerfully too, that they may live in safety, and in the days to come you can never think enough or do enough for any of these brave fellows who have marched and fought and bled for their country“

Born 1892 and educated at Gordon's College, Aberdeen.

Entered company service at Aberdeen in 1909.

Initially served with the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in Egypt and Gallipoli. Commissioned to the 6th Gordon Highlanders in 1917.

Military Cross gazetted 26 July 1918 while 2nd Lieutenant: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Throughout six days fighting this officer displayed great qualities as a leader, his coolness and disregard of danger inspiring all under him. On one occasion, taking up a position on the flank with a small party and Lewis gun, he kept up such a harassing fire that time was given for the battalion to reorganise."

Bar to Military Cross gazetted 15 October 1918: " For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He commanded one of the front line companies and led them with the greatest dash in the most difficult circumstances, capturing several machine-guns and heavy mortars. He was finally wounded, but did not leave his men until he had reorganised them and started consolidation of his line. He showed splendid courage and resource.”

In 1919 he rejoined the company working in Bristol, Cardiff and Dundee before being transferred to Calcutta branch where he was eventually appointed manager in 1925.
