”Home dwellers can never know what these men are suffering and cheerfully too, that they may live in safety, and in the days to come you can never think enough or do enough for any of these brave fellows who have marched and fought and bled for their country“

| In the crew of C4 Chablis which was one of the first tanks deployed on 15 September 1916 the first time tanks were used in action. C4 Chablis was one of three tanks tasked to support an attack on the Courcellette sugar factory. He operated one of the four machine guns. The tank was damaged en route to its "jump-off point" by enemy artillery fire. The tank, which had been used for training in Norfolk before being used in this action, suffered from loose tracks and the driver; Private Daniel Cronin attempted to tighten tracks assisted by Corporal Harrison but they worked loose again; one falling off completely and tank was abandoned. The commander then ordered the crew, including Pickworth, to the rear. Continued to serve with the Tank Corps for the remainder of the war. Awarded Military Medal for his action on 22 August 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres "When most of the crew of his tank had been severely wounded near Pommern Redoubt this man displayed great courage and self-sacrifice in several times passing through an intense artillery barrage in his efforts to obtain stretcher-bearers." | |
