Initially Lance Sergeant in 47th division Cyclist Corps. Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry on 25 May and 26 May 1915 at Givenchy. Was first member of staff to be decorated. Awarded Military Cross in June 1918 for descending to a height of 100 feet during a low flying bombing attack and dropping four bombs amongst a body of enemy troop causing heavy casualties, for attacking three enemy machines two of which crashed and for displaying the greatest judgment determination and daring.
