Born 25 August 1888 in Edinburgh. Father was Leeds manager. Entered company service in 1907 in the Leeds office. Resident inspector at Huddersfield in 1912, local manager at Belfast in 1914. Mobilised in 1914 served most of the war in France attained the command of a battery and the rank of Major. From 1907-1929 he played rugby for Yorkshire and was capped for England in the 1911-1912 season. Military Cross gazetted 14 January 1916. No citation. Also mentioned in dispatches. Returned to company to work in Aberdeen branch in 1919, then Newcastle on Tyne in 1927, before becoming manager for Scotland in 1938. Retired in 1951 |

Appointed 1910. Enlisted London Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles). Awarded Military Medal for effecting rescue of a wounded officer under heavy shell and machine gun fire. Awarded Military Cross 21 March 1918, the first day of the German offensive while commanding the battery in the absence of the Major he showed entire disregard of danger, and had only one gun left in action when a withdrawal became necessary. He then sent spare men back under an officer to hold a point in rear and continued to fight his one gun till compelled to fall back with one remaining gunner. His fearlessness and determination were most meritorious.
