Assurantie Compagnie te Amsterdam, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1790

Brandmaatschappij te Amsterdam, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1804

Algemeene Brand-Garantie-Maatschaapij voor de stad Amsterdam, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1806

Bataafsche-Brandwaarborg Maatschaapij (Bataafsche) van 1806, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1807

Hollandsche Societeit van Levensverzekeringen (Hollandsche Societeit), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established. The company claims to be one of the very first life insurance businesses to draw up premium tables based on scientific calculations instead of charging speculative premium rates. A ship carrying 37,000 pounds of gunpowder explodes in Leyden, destroying the Rapenburg quarter. Hollandsche Societeit makes an ex gratia payment of 14,000 florins to the victims.

1808

Hollandsche Societeit refuses an application for a policy on the life of the Emperor Napoleon by a third party, considering it to be simply a wager policy on the life of a “crowned person”.

1809

Overijsselsche Onderlinge Brandwaarborg Maatschaapij (Overijsselsche), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established in Zwolle.

1843

Noord-Braband Begrafenisfonds of Waalwijk (Noord-Braband), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established to insure against burial costs.

1848

Maatschappij tot Nut van het Algemeen (Nuts), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1853

De Nederlandsche Lloyd (Nedlloyd), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1854

On May 11, the Northern Assurance Company Ltd, later part of the Commercial Union Assurance Company Ltd, appoints Edward Taylor of Hope & Company agent for Amsterdam.

1862

On March 6, the Northern appoints Dominique Verswyvel and Dr Jarques agent and medical officer for Antwerp.

1863

On April 9, the Northern appoints Messrs Trier Bros agent for Amsterdam. Commercial Union has appointed Messrs Harley & Glassencoe and Joseph de Kuper agents for Rotterdam. Arnhemsche Verekering Maatschappij NV, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1866

BV Beleggings Maatschappij van de verzekeing Maatschappij Schiedam (Schiedam Van Insurance Company), later part of the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, is established.

1868

On 29 October, the North British & Mercantile Insurance Company Ltd, later part of Commercial Union, appoints Mr J P E Freusel Weguer as general manager for Holland.

1869

On 23 January, North British & Mercantile signs a formal treaty with the Assurance Company of Amsterdam to acquire that company’s business in Prussia.

1872

Norwich Union Fire appoints Messrs Boebert agent for Amsterdam.

1877

In October, the Northern appoints C M Tulleners agent for Rotterdam.

1883

The Railway Passengers Assurance Company Ltd, later part of Commercial Union, opens an agency in Amsterdam, its first overseas agency. By this date, Amsterdamsche Assurantie Associatie De Koepel NV (De Koepel), later part of Delta Lloyd, has been established.

1884

In October, the Northern appoints Van Buren Bros agent for Rotterdam. The City of London Marine Insurance Company Ltd, later part of Commercial Union, is now operating in Rotterdam and Amsterdam under Mr W Schütz.

1885

On 1 December, J M Bicker Caarten & Obreen is appointed marine agent for Commercial Union in the Netherlands. The Ocean Marine Insurance Company, later part of Commercial Union, appoints Tollenaar & Wegener marine agent in the Netherlands while the City of London Marine Insurance Company Ltd establishes an agency in Rotterdam under Mr W Stronck.

1887

On 26 July, Commercial Union appoints William Jacobus Havelock fire agent for Rotterdam. Levensverzekering-Maatschappij Aurora NV (Aurora), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1888

The Employers’ Liability Assurance Corporation Ltd, later part of Commercial Union, opens its first European branch in Amsterdam.

1889

The Yorkshire Fire & Life Insurance Company, later part of the General Accident Fire & Life Assurance Corporation Ltd appoints Koopman & Company agent for Amsterdam, the company’s first foreign agent. The South British Fire and Marine Insurance Company of New Zealand, later part of General Accident, is now represented by Blom & Van der Aa in Amsterdam and in Rotterdam by Gebrs Van Buren.

1890

Les Provinces Reuinis, later part of Commercial Union, begins operations in Holland. NV Algemeene Verzekering Maatschappij Diligentia van 1890’, later part of Delta Lloyd, is now established.

1891

The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society appoints Messrs Witkamp & Company agent for Amsterdam. The Scottish Union & National Insurance Company, later part of Norwich Union Fire, appoints Messrs De Groot & Rood as agent for Rotterdam and Messrs Reepmaker, Joosling & Van Eijk as agent for Amsterdam. In April, the Northern appoints Tulleners & Brummer agent for Rotterdam.

1892

Amsterdamsche Maatschappij van Levensverzekeringen NV (Amstleven), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established as a life insurer. Commercial Union appoints Isaac Edward Havelaar agent for Rotterdam.

1895

Commercial Union appoints Blom & Van der Aa marine agent for Amsterdam.

1897

Norwich Union Fire appoints a new agent for Holland, Mr S J Schermer. Schermer will represent the company until 1966.

1899

The Yorkshire appoints Tulleners & Brummer agent for Rotterdam and Messrs Koopman & Company agent for Amsterdam.

1900

On July 18, the Yorkshire appoints L van Houkan agent for Rotterdam.

1906

General Accident establishes a branch in the Netherlands at 55 Fredericksplein in Amsterdam.

1909

Mr H J A Koopman is appointed manager for General Accident in Holland.

1911

On 1 November, Messrs Gustav J J Witt are appointed agent for fire business in Holland for the British General Insurance Company Ltd, later part of Commercial Union.

The Yorkshire extends operations in Holland to include accident insurance. Scottish Union & National appoints Seeuwen & Company agent for Rotterdam.

1913

Nationaal Spaarfonds NV, later part of Delta Lloyd, is established.

1914

Commercial Union appoints Tulleners & Brummer agent for Rotterdam.

1919

On 16 September, Commercial Union appoints Algemeen Assurantie Kantoor de Bas fire agent for The Hague. Norwich Union Fire is now represented by Spierenburg & Dreibeck and has offices at Van Boetzelaerlaan 85, The Hague.

1920s

Norwich Union Life closes its operations in the Netherlands.

1921

Scottish Union & National is represented by Van Eijk & Krookewit in Amsterdam.

1923

In July, the Northern appoints A C Fraser & Company agent for Rotterdam.

1924

The Yorkshire is now represented in Rotterdam by W Brummer and in Amsterdam by Sickler & Scheltema and by Messrs Koopman & Company (at Heerengracht 370).

1925

Onderlinge Ziektekostenverzekeringsfonds van Hogere Rijksambtenaren (Ohra), later part of Delta Lloyd, is established while the English Insurance Company Ltd begins operations in Holland.

1936

General Accident is now operating in the following cities in the Netherlands:

General Accident has appointed J D Veldheer manager for Holland by this date.

1955

Arnhemsche Verekering Maatschaapij NV introduces legal aid insurance in Holland.

1956

General Accident is now based at Herengracht 573, Amsterdam.

1958

Hollandsche Societeit acquires Bataafsche while J C de Milde is General Accident manager for Holland. De Koepel, later part of Delta Lloyd, acquires Assurantie Compagnie te Amsterdam.

1961

Amstleven, later part of Delta Lloyd, acquires Arnhemsche.

1962

Norwich Union Fire acquires a 70% holding in the Schiedam Van Insurance Company.

1963

Hollandsche Societeit acquires De Koepel. Scottish Union & National maintains operations in the Netherlands.

1964

Nationaal Spaarfonds is acquired by Hollandsche Societeit, later part of Delta Lloyd, while Overijsselsche is acquired by Nedlloyd, which will also be acquired by Delta Lloyd.

1965

General Accident opens a new office on Museuk Square Amsterdam. Commercial Union appoints Messrs Blom & Van der Aa agent for Amsterdam at Prins Hendrikkade 33, PO Box 224. Nedlloyd acquires Onderlinge Boerenbrandwaarborg Maatschappij (OBBM).

1967

Nedlloyd acquires Aurora NV Levensvekering-Maatschappij.

1968

Amstleven and Hollandsche Societeit merge to form Delta, later part of Delta Lloyd.

1969

Delta acquires Noord-Braband. Later in the year, Delta merges with Nedlloyd to form Delta Lloyd Verzekeringsgroep NV, later part of Commercial Union. Norwich Union Fire fully acquires the Schiedam Van Insurance Company.

1971

General Accident appoints Mr B J Baskerville manager for the Netherlands. The General Accident offices are now at Johannes Vermeerstraat 9, Amsterdam. Overijsselsche Onderlinge Brandwaarborg Maatschappij changes its name to Delta Lloyd Landbouw Onderlinge Versekeringsmaatschappij. Assurantiekantoor Atlas BV, later part of General Accident, is established.

1973

On 1 September, Commercial Union acquires Delta Lloyd.

1975

Delta Lloyd purchases new premises at De Omval in Amsterdam

1990

Schiedam Van changes its name to NU Schadeverzekering.

1991

General Accident acquires Assurantiekantoor Atlas BV.

1992

Delta Lloyd is amalgamated with the newly established Bank Centrade NV.

1994

Nuts merges with Ohra to form Nuts Ohra. NU Schadeverzekering is sold to Royal Nederland.

1997

Nuts Ohra acquires the General Accident business in the Netherlands.

1999

Delta Lloyd merges with Nuts Ohra to form Delta Lloyd Nuts Ohra.

2002

On 1 January, Delta Lloyd Nuts Ohra NV changes its name to Delta Lloyd NV.

2003

Delta Lloyd establishes ABN AMRO Insurances, a joint venture with ABN AMRO Bank.

2006

Delta Lloyd insures the construction and risks of Q7, the offshore wind farm being built some 25 kilometres off the Dutch coast at IJmuiden. It is the only Dutch insurance company with the necessary expertise to insure this specialised project. Ohra enters the virtual world, offering customers a general and liability insurance package on Eccky, an online life simulation game in which people raise a virtual baby. The move is part of a project to highlight the importance of insurance to young customers and to experiment with different methods of communicating with future customers.

2007

The Delta Lloyd Group announces plans to acquire the Erasmus Groep BV, based in Rotterdam, from Wüstenrot & Württembergische AG, which is based in Stuttgart, Germany.
