The company was established :

"for the purpose of transacting the various forms of insurance of horses and cattle, owned by the gentry, agriculturalists, tradesmen etc."

By 1905, it claimed to be the leading livestock insurer in the United Kingdom and a pioneer in foaling insurance, having been the first company to introduce double insurance on foals.

Shortly after the business was established, the company entered an agreement with General Accident under which the two companies were not to enter each others' business areas for seven years. The companies continued to have a close business relationship. General Accident agreed to act as agents for Scottish Live Stock and by the time of the 1909 acquisition, General Accident was reinsuring home, foreign and Canadian fire risks with the company.
