The association was established by Charles Rackham Gilman, son of C Storey Gilman, who had established the General Hailstorm Insurance Society in Norwich three years earlier. By 1870, it was offering insurance

"against accidental death with compensation in case of personal injury by accidents of all kinds, plate glass insured against breakage".

The association changed its name in 1875 to the Norwich and London Accident Insurance Association. In 1885, it started to offer employers' liability insurance and, by 1892, had extended its business to include railway accidents, marine accidents and fidelity guarantee insurance. By 1918, the association was principally operating as an accident insurer in Australia, acting as a brand name for Norwich Union in the country until the 1930s.
