The Great Britain Mutual Life Assurance Society

The society was established under a deed of settlement on February 12 1844 and formally registered under the Joint Stock Companies Act on January 1 1845. It was originally established as a mutual society offering life assurance, annuities and endowments in the United Kingdom and overseas.

The society was incorporated by a special Act of Parliament, which received royal assent on June 30 1862. In 1871, a sister company, the Great Britain Fire Insurance Company, was established to provide fire insurance.

In 1880, an order was placed for the liquidation of the society and, on August 22 1882, it was acquired by the National Assurance Company of Ireland, which was itself acquired by the Yorkshire Insurance Company Ltd in 1906. The Yorkshire became part of the General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation Ltd in 1967.
