Material gains

Materials - New donations
The material that we gather arrives in the archive from a variety of sources. Colleagues are often thoughtful enough to send us material. Recent additions to the archive have included current promotional material from group companies in Turkey; wonderful West of England objects, policies and photographs from our Exeter branch prior to their move to Pynes Hill and a lovely Ocean Accident promotional mirror that we received from Mr K Jones.
We are sometimes contacted by other archives. Archivists at Zurich, whose own archive is set, to close sent us a set of Post Magazines. The magazines are invaluable in helping date events and in uncovering interesting titbits of information on our constituent companies and their staff. We are missing volumes from before 1909 and between 1922 and 1929 and would love to hear from anyone knows where we might get hold of any to fill the gaps.
Other material arrives from members of the public. Howard Smith rescued a tranche of material following the closure of the sports ground at Beckenham. Among the gems were a proposal for the insurance of war memorials and sundry programmes mostly from the mid 1950s for performances by the CUACO players.
There were also articles on Hugh Millar of Commercial Union who received two football international caps for Scotland in 1949 and 1950 while also playing with his colleagues for the CUACO football team. He joins the ranks of other Aviva sporting staff such as Jayne Torvill and Don Thompson (Mighty Mouse), who won the Olympic 50km walk gold medal in Rome in 1960. We would be interested to hear of any other sporting heroes we should be adding to our list, so if you can think of any please do let us know.
