We're the second-largest life business within the whole Aviva group. And, within the USA, we're number one for sales of both fixed-indexed annuities and fixed-indexed life insurance, with more than one million customers.
Three of Aviva’s founder companies established businesses in the USA in the 19th Century. The first was Commercial Union who, in 1869, made John Rae Hamilton of San Francisco its first American fire insurance agent. Norwich Union, began its business in California in 1874, then opened a New York office in 1879, and General Accident opened its first office in Philadelphia in 1899. Norwich Union paid out a staggering $1 million in claims made following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
In 2001, following the merger of Norwich Union, Commercial Union and General Accident, we sold our general insurance business. In 2003, our long-term savings business based in Boston adopted the Aviva brand, and in 2006, following the acquisition of AmerUs Group, Aviva USA moved its headquarters to Des Moines.
We provide life insurance products and annuities. Our range of products includes our exclusive Wellness for Life products, with health information services provided by The Mayo Clinic.
