Our business in France includes a top-10 long-term savings operation, a leading asset manager and an established general insurer.
We can trace our roots back to 1856, when farmers in Dijon founded Abeille Bourguignonne to provide insurance against hailstorms destroying their crops. In 1976 Abeille merged with another insurer, La Paix, to form Group Victoire, before launching two new insurance businesses, Abeille Vie and Abeille Assurances.
In 1994, Group Victoire was bought by Commercial Union. Previously, Commercial Union had opened its first office in France in 1885, bought life insurer Epargne de France in 1983 and created direct insurer Eurofil in 1990.
In 1998, Commercial Union merged with General Accident and Norwich Union’s French business in 2000. The combined business was renamed Aviva in 2002. Read more about our history.
Aviva Vie
A top-10 long-term savings company with a market share of 4%, Aviva Vie has around 1.5 million customers and employs more than 1,300 staff. We have an established partnership with AFER, the largest savings association in France, to provide its half a million members with non-savings products.
Aviva Direct
The market leader for direct sales of health, individual protection and savings products, we have around 450,000 customers and employ 120 staff. We also enjoy a bancassurance partnership with Crédit du Nord.
Aviva Assurances
We sell insurance through one of the largest agency networks in France, offering personal and commercial insurance, specialist legal protection (La Paix), health cover (AMIS) and savings and life insurance from Aviva Vie. We employ 1,000 staff and have 1.2 million customers.
Eurofil
We’re the second-largest direct sales insurer in France, employing 365 people. We offer a range of motor, home and health insurance products direct to customers over the phone and online.
Long-term savings – a wide range of savings, pensions, protection and investment products.
General insurance – mostly personal and small commercial insurance, such as motor, household, healthcare, agricultural and construction products.
Asset management – equity and fixed interest funds, plus specialist property management.
